It wasn't that Dom didn't notice things, it was simply that he only took notice of what interested him. Once something caught his fancy, sparked his imagination, he would zone in on it at the expense of everything else around him.

When he was small and he first discovered the possibilities of art, he would spend hours in his room drawing or painting or would wander through Teignmouth, to sit on the beach and sketch.

Then music came along and blotted out even his interest in art. The drums became an extension of himself expressing everything that beat inside of him, releasing things he had only been dimly aware of and incapable of articulating. He learnt swiftly and worked on building up his strength, his appetite insatiable.

His appetite was insatiable in other ways too. After a revelation of an afternoon spent hidden behind the school bike shed with Katie, a pretty girl in the class below him, at the age of 15, Dom found something else that fired him in every way imaginable. He lost himself and recovered himself every weekend, on the way home from clubs in dark alleyways, sneaking into the girls bedroom or even hidden in the park.

But somehow, even these exlploits lost their charm and wonder for Dom. He wanted more. He felt itchy, almost, a constant needling, like a small dog trying to get his attention or the torture of knowing that you've forgotten something important- he wanted more.

If pressed to elaborate on this need for something more Dom wouldn't have been able to explain it. He would play the drums again, trying to explian himself to himself. Which was where he found his answer. He formed a band.

But then it was as if Dom had found exactly what he wanted and needed except that his own ability to be equal to it was constantly out of reach. He worked furiously, devising his own rhythms and patterns for drumming, working always to improve, to be good enough- for what Dom didnt know. Those around him were holding him back. They simply wanted the second-hand sensation of music, the donning of a costume. They forgot about the band as soon as practice was over whereas Dom dreamt of drums,he dreamt entire concerts, a world inhabited by god-like musicians sprouting wings and always swirling in dry ice.

He also dreamt of the person he could find whose feelings about music, life and ambition would mirror his own entirely. They were there, hidden amongst the dry-ice, blotted out by the glare of the stage-lights, only half-seen. He had this dream often and though he would never admit to believing in such things, he felt that the dreams recurrence must mean one day he would find this person in reality- which was another reason why Dom worked so hard.

And then he met Matt Bellamy.
  • Gorgeous, stunning! Wow, your writing flows so beautifully. And your descriptions and personifications are just brilliant. I love the character you've given Dom. It's so different from Matt's but yet there is this one similarity of being a perfectionist, if I'm not mistaken.

He worked furiously, devising his own rhythms and patterns for drumming, working always to improve, to be good enough- for what Dom didnt know.

Loved the contrast of this sentence. Trying to find something that's still unknown it's a weird feeling. I can't wait to read more from you! <3
  • Oh, interesting. I like their differences, first we have Matt who is this shy, introverted boy, and now we have Dom, out-going and passionate. Can´t wait for them to meet!!

  • I'm loving this! I love how you describe Dom, really looking forwards to more :)
  • Your narrative is stunning, I can't even describe what's so special about it...

He wanted more. He felt itchy, almost, a constant needling, like a small dog trying to get his attention or the torture of knowing that you've forgotten something important- he wanted more.

I really liked this part because I've gone through the same thing... Oh and the first and second part ending in the same way... god, thet must be a colossal meeting! :D

    xx
  • This reads so beautifully, it's gorgeous. :D I love it and I can't wait to read more. :)
